Make your own Dormant Oil Spray:  BioSafe !


Dormant oil is a nontoxic spray to control sucking and chewing insects in the egg stage before they can do any damage. Use dormant oil on trees, shrubs and evergreens in early spring while they are still dormant, before buds develop. You can buy the spray from any garden supply store or make your own from mineral oil and soap using the following recipe:

1 gallon mineral oil
1 pound oil-based soap
1/2 gallon water

Combine all ingredients, boil, and mix very well. Dilute 1:20 with water and use immediately because the ingredients separate quickly.

Spray on a day when the temperature is above 40 degrees and you are not expecting a freeze for at least 24 hours. Drench the branches of your shrubs and trees thoroughly - it's impossible to overdo it.

For citrus trees, you should buy a special dormant oil from your garden supply store. Citrus leaves can be damaged by the film that remains on the leaves.

 OR:   Just use 1 oz. of NEEM OIL, 1/2 oz. of dishsoap to 1 gallon of water.   Apply with tank sprayer when leaves have fallen off or just before the tree buds.   In emergency cases, OK to use on leaves.  Try not to get any on the bottoms of the leaves, as this is how the trees breathe. 

Most of the fruit trees in this orchard are Dwarf trees.  If you don't have the land, there is no reason why we can't buy dwarf trees.  Every DIY store on the planet has a garden center.  Just buy 'em cheap !  Remember that some trees need special pollinators like Black tartarian cherry.  In this case we need a pollinator like the ever popular North Star cherry.  These are great for pies and don't need no pollinators themselves.

Nut trees need some room to grow.   Make sure they're spaced at least 15' from each other.  One other note:  Black walnut trees and a few other species produce a natural anti-growth hormone through their root systems to slow down the growth of it's competitors.   


No lawn should be without White Dutch Clover.  This amazing plant produces small amounts of nitrogen in the soil plus the Bumble, Honey bees love it !
